There was always extra rope aboard a ship to repair clothes, which is how Rope-Yarn Sunday got its name. Rope was a material of function and beauty. Sailors practiced marlinespike seamanship for the daily workings of a ship, lashing, splicing, whipping lines, and tying knots. The sailors knotted and braided to embellish their ship and personal belongings.
